Walsh modified the CME trading floor to allow for new participants and to consolidate all open outcry trading in one location. The project encompassed a complete or partial demolition of seven pits and three high tierings to make way for 20 new pits and three new high tierings—two of which were constructed with structural steel and concrete deck. In addition, a new handheld and headset distribution room was constructed at the northwest corner of the trading floor. The work was a complete interior remodel of a 40,000-square-foot space with installation of new structural wood and steel members, flooring, wall, stair finishes, steel handrails, a renovated HVAC delivery system, and a complete rewiring of the trading floor for low-voltage communication and data cables.
